Why don't companies that support free emails (yahoo, gmail, hotmail) provide better spam filters?

granted, gmail is better than the rest, but it could even be improved. why doesn't yahoo improve theirs? yahoo's and hotmail's "mark as spam training" doesn't seem to be effective at all. gmail seems to work okay for me, and rarely misses some, but it could be improved.

an example of a good spamfilter (also FREE) -- SPAMBAYES has a "junk email folder" but then also has an "unsure" folder...

See, each email is given a %spam rating. and under 10% is considered real email (aka HAM), and over 90% is considered SPAM. between 10-90% goes into the unsure (which rarely happens), and it seems to be really really accurate. There is also an initial training, and since everyone receives different kinds of spam/ham this helps make it very accurate.

having this extra folder, an initial training period, and %spam rating system seems to make it virtually error-free.

am i missing something? anyone think yahoo spam/bulk mail should be improved in a similar fashion? why don't they?

I haven't had any trouble yet with SPAM filters, mine works great!
Reply:my yahoo! spam filter works fine. you have to train it by marking mail in your inbox as spam if necessary, and marking mail in your bulk folder as not spam, if need be.
Reply:you need to adjust your yahoo mail settings. I don't get any junk mail in my inbox. It goes directly into the bulk folder, which I have set uyp to automatically empty intself.
Reply:Hi.

I know the pain. If you sing-up for Yahoo! mail Plus, you'll get improved filtering and the ability to access your mail via SMTP/POP3.

This way you can use MS Outlook, Outlook Express, or your favoriter reader PLUS third-party smapn support like MailWasher.

For now, Yahoo! Mail Help does have a suggestion/feedback form.

However, dont look for an immediate response. This things usually can take several months if not a year to come under consideration.

I hope this helps.
