I received an email from abc@gmail on behalf of xyz@hotmail, how is this possible.
does that mean that the owner of both accounts is the same person, or can some1 use their gmail to send an email on behalf of some1 else??

Yes, in fact you can setup gmail to send and receive emails on other email accounts
