I am working on a web site for a company. One of the requirements is to allow the users to import contact list from public email accounts. Is it illegal to do this?
Is it illegal for a commercial site to grab contacts from Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail?
It's not illegal, if you ask user's permission to do so. You won't be able to do it without having them enter their login details anyway, but you need to clearly state why you're asking for them and what they will be used for. They should not be stored, or used for any purpose other than to import contact lists. Some social networking sites already do this, see the following Slashdot article.
